Wading Birds of Wisconsin

Wading Birds of Wisconsin

These 24 wading birds are summer residents that breed in Wisconsin. Some of them are common and recognizable by everyone who has visited lakeshores, marshes and other wetlands. Some may be common but well-hidden in shore vegetation, thus seldom noticed. Some are rare and not often observed even by dedicated birders. These birds saunter along shores, poking and searching for insects, crayfish, small fishes and similar denizens of shallow water, mudflats, sandy beaches and other wetland habitats. Cranes are seen not only in wetlands where they nest, but also foraging in croplands and other uplands; they are included here because cranes are regularly spotted in shorebird habitats. Specimens from the UWZM Ornithology collection were used for illustration details.
